On Friday, September 12, 2014 Terra L. Fletcher presented a Fun Intro to Social Media for the Oneida Nation at Thornberry Creek near Green Bay, WI. Apache Danforth began the day with social media statistics and reminders of why social media is so important in our communication. Fletcher overviewed some of the most popular social media sites, talked about how to manage social media beyond 9-5, encouraged users not to neglect their websites, and closed with motivational and encouraging words to lead others to use social media well.

3rd Annual Social Media Workshop 2014 Thornberry Creek at Oneida Friday, September 12 – 7:30 am – 1:30 pmFocus on Standard Operating Procedures |
Purpose:
The workshop is for Oneida Tribal employees who operate social media on behalf of the Tribe leave the workshop with a draft Standard Operating Procedure and ultimately are in compliance with the Oneida Tribal Social Media Policy.
Who:
The workshop is specifically for Oneida Tribal employees (first 50 to RSVP) who operate social media platforms on behalf of the Oneida Tribe and their supervisors, managers or directors. These employees will be given a chance to RSVP before official announcements are distributed to the organization. Also asked to attend will be those interested in learning about how they might make social media work in their perspective areas.
What:
There will be two informational sessions, an SOP workshop, and final panel:
- Terra L. Fletcher – Fun introduction to social media
Purpose:
This session provides a broad overview of social media. Even if you’ve been using social media for your tribal department, attending this session is a great refresher and you may even find a new social media platform that would be a great addition to your current social media usage. - Anne Thundercloud– Best and Worst– Why guidelines are important in social media
Purpose:
Attendees will leave this session understanding why good Standard Operating Procedures for social media are important. This session highlights the best examples of social media and social media disasters. Some are entertaining, while others are disturbing. Learn what procedures might help to either promote good social media or deter disasters.
- Terry Hetzel – Workshop to draft a Tribal Standard Operating Procedure
Purpose:
Attendees will leave this session with the fundamental knowledge of how to draft an SOP to guide their social media practices.
- Panel to include all presenters
The workshop will conclude with a panel, bringing together breakout session presenters and recognition of tribal administrators who are doing an exemplary job of operating social media sites on behalf of the tribe.
Goals:
- Demonstrate the importance and credibility of social media to those who are not yet using social media for business purposes.
- Introduce the organization to the social media and get those entities that have social media domains on behalf of the tribe using social media effectively.
- All attendees leave with an Oneida Tribal Standard Operating Procedure for social media in their respective areas.
- Strategically use social media to bolster tribe’s image to the all of our audiences.

- Develop a basic social media strategic plan that will encompass the wide range of areas within the organization.
