3 Benefits of Virtual Learning

Being about a year into online teaching, I’ve discovered untold benefits to the virtual environment. Classes I swore couldn’t be done virtually, I’ve taught online and had great success. Here are a few of the benefits of electronic learning.

(1.) Consistency

One of my favorite courses that I’ve taught during the last year was a facilitation course. The same course I swore could not be done online, I taught 100% virtually. Students joined from around the country and even internationally. The global company that hired me appreciated getting all their employees on the same page. How else could I teach so many people in so many places (and enjoy so many lovely accents)?

(2.) Engagement

Early on, I worried about students’ ability to engage with their learning in the online environment. I worried they’d only half listen. No doubt many of you take advantage of educational podcasts and videos while you’re working. When I’m doing simple tasks that only require half my brain, I might listen to Spanish lessons, TED talks, or podcasts. But that is just quality background noise, not virtual learning.

Virtual learning is engaging. It requires 100% of the instructors’ energy and much more than the students’ passive listening while checking emails. And I have to say, I’m so pleased with the beautiful gift my attendees have given me when they tune in to my virtual classes in the last year. Receiving someone’s undivided attention is a gift. I show my appreciation by providing animated presentations worthy of their attention.

I set the expectation in my virtual classrooms that participants turn their cameras on and show up ready to learn. I try not to speak for longer than ten minutes at a time. We play games, act out scenarios, break out into smaller groups for discussion and deep work. We watch videos, take quizzes, answer polls, and even sing, play improv games, and do scavenger hunts. Yes, e-learners can be fully engaged!

As an experienced virtual presenter, I manage time wisely. I plan out the class outline and look for ways to ensure everyone participates and learns something new. A virtual presentation is not the same as watching a video. It’s better. But don’t just take my word for it. Here are a few of my recent classroom reviews.

(3.) Affordability

Virtual presentations are more affordable than in-person training because we’re taking out the travel element, mine and yours. You and your employees can be in your home offices or wherever they go to work each day. My commute is only a few steps. Virtual training cuts expenses for everyone. Plus we can bring our own snacks and use our own facilities, making everyone comfortable.

Technology makes it possible for me to offer multiple presentations in a week. Sometimes, more than one in a single day. Because of the astronomical savings of time and money, I can provide my speaking services at a reduced rate. What would’ve cost you thousands of dollars for an in-person training can now be as little as $500 for virtual training!
